Making Design Matter : A 4-part learning module for Design Professionals
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
As algorithms and automation quickly take over the routine activities of human life, humans will soon be left with doing jobs that tap on to the creative, emotional side of humans. The good news is that design professionals will find themselves at the centre stage in this new era.
It is also an era of fast change and innovation, an era of ‘innovate or die’. Design is quickly being adopted and accepted in business circles as the main driver of innovation. With this, design takes on a more serious path as a collaborative process involving design and non-design professionals. In such circles, design has become way too serious to be left to design professionals alone.
Design professionals pick up technical skills in campus and early working life. A few may even pick up additional skills related to their chosen field of work by doing some additional courses. However all of these are uni-directional and sharpen the designer’s skills towards being near perfect in his legacy design skills. The need of the hour is for designers to step back from this uni-directional reality and look at themselves relative to how the very meaning of ‘design’ itself is changing. Across all fields of work, the power of design as a problem solver is most effective only when it is adopted as a highly collaborative process.
Designers need to adapt to the new reality and pick up skills that allow them to:
- Add value, relative to the new meaning of design
- Enable a design idea to become reality in this complex web
- Adopt a user-centric approach from being client-centric
- Solve real world problems
